The Veil of Dreams – a collaborative project by Jesse Bransford and Max Razdow, was completed over a six month period in 2014, wherein the artists ritually traced their dreams and created drawings, sculptures, photographs and a 300+ page facsimile of their dream and travel journals.

The work featured at SPRING/BREAK includes: Jesse Bransford’s Helms of Awe (Ægishjálmr) as well as remaining examples of his staves for The Sayings of the High One, drawings created in response to the Hávamál — practical magical teachings attributed to the Norse god Odin. The staves, which are based on Icelandic magical sigils, are original works made for both drawing and sculptural formats in response to the experiences and potential for Galdur magic implicated in the Veil of Dreams. Max Razdow’s Well Cards were used to activate and catalog the imagery arriving in the midst of their dreaming journeys, created in a mode of ink scrying with ritually collected sea water. Razdow’s Dream Map attempts to find geographic consistencies within the six months of dreams recounted by each artist, utilizing Norse cosmology as a framework over which their dream-wanderings may have occurred. The artists also have created a portfolio of photographs from their culminating (physical) journey to Iceland’s remote Strandir coast in October of 2014, traversing landscapes that had reverberated strongly in their prior somnabulations.
